Chinhoyi University of Technology Department of Travel and Recreation
The Travel and Recreation Department prides itself in offering a relatively new and unique set of cutting edge degree programmes designed to provide contemporary solutions to the human capital challenges experienced by the Tourism and Hospitality Industry. These much sought after degree programmes are namely Bachelor of Science (Honours) Travel, Leisure and Recreation as well as Bachelor of Science (Honours) Event Design and Operations. The degree programmes provide students with the opportunities to develop expertise tailored for the human capital needs of particular subsectors of the tourism industry, something which lacks in the traditional tourism degree programmes. The Department has therefore an outstanding reputation around Zimbabwe as the ONLY centre in Zimbabwe offering these degree programs so far.
Graduates of the aforementioned degree programmes have vast opportunities ahead of them after successful completion of their studies. Bsc (Honours) Event Design and Operations graduates will be able to start and run their own event based business ventures given the entrepreneurial training involved. They will also be employable among others as: event managers, event designers, event marketing consultants, hotel or corporate functions managers, banqueting coordinators, amusement park managers, convention and visitors bureau managers, festival event managers and events catering managers. On the other hand, after successful completion of the Travel, Leisure and Recreation degree programme, graduates will be able to start their own Travel, Leisure and Recreation business ventures given the entrepreneurial training offered. They can also be employed as leisure services marketers, leisure and recreation services managers, travel consultants, tour operators, travel agents, researchers, recreation therapists, resort managers, airline marketers, airline caterers, municipal/ campus recreation program coordinators, event managers, country club managers and recreational park managers. Graduates may choose to embark on post-graduate studies which can lead to academic professions.
As part of giving back to the community the Department prides itself in activities such as; Chirorodziva Calabash an annual event that showcases the rich, historical culture and heritage of the Mashonaland West community and the Chirorodziva Tours Desk, situated at the Chinhoyi University Hotel, which provides tours in and around the Mashonaland West Province.
