The first Principal was Keith Youds. In 1985, Dr. Henry Moyana was Principal. Mr. S. Madzokere then took over from Moyana. Mrs.Jane Makawa then took over after Mr. S. Madzokere followed by Mr. P. T.Masendeke, who is currently the Principal of the College.

Belvedere Technical Teachers College was founded in 1982 as the only technical teachers training college in Zimbabwe. The first intake of the college started at Seke Teachers’ College and then moved to the current site of Belvedere suburb in 1983. It was built on the former Harare airport on twenty-one hectares of land overlooking the sacred National Heroes Acres.

The college was built at a cost of US$15 million dollars and it fits perfectly into the reorganized programme of Teacher Education in Zimbabwe. It was at the ZIMCORD conference that the then Minister of Education, Comrade Dzingai Mutumbuka was offered $6 million to build new secondary schools in rural areas by the American representative. Instead of accepting the money for that purpose he proposed that the money be donated to build a college for training teachers in the much neglected area of technical subjects. The Americans approved and thus this college, which was to cost more than double its original estimated amount, was born.

The college trains secondary school teachers in both academic and technical subjects and has a capacity to enrol over two thousand students. It has a professional establishment of 273 that is 157 lecturing staff and 116 support staff.

The college has four non-technical departments, viz; Humanities (Geography, Commercial Studies), Natural Sciences (Mathematics, Science and Physical Education and Sport), Education (Theory of Education and Teaching Practice) and Professional and Contemporary Studies (National Strategic Studies, Professional Studies and Health Education). It has also a Technical and Vocational Department with the following sections: Technical Graphics, Wood Technology, Agriculture, Mechanical Engineering,Tourism and Hospitality Management, Clothing and Textile Technology, Information Technology, Building Technology and, Art and Design.

The core business of the college is training science, Tech/Voc teachers and personnel for industry. Before 1992, each student was offered an academic subject and a technical subject. Later the programme was modified into two, that is, Tech/Voc (3/4 year programme) and academic programme (2 years for Post “A” level or 3 years for Post “O” level).
