Programme Overview

The Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Optometry is designed to prepare the student to examine patients’ eyes, test their sight, give advice on visual problems and prescribe and fit spectacles or contact lenses when needed. Students are trained to recognize diseases of the eye, such as Glaucoma and Cataract, as well as general health conditions such as Diabetes. They refer patients to medical practitioners when necessary, as well as sometimes sharing the care of patients with chronic conditions. Some Optometrists work in academic settings doing research and/or teaching, and also in the optical manufacturing industry.

Entry Requirements
To be eligible for admission a candidate must have:

  • At least 5 ‘O’ Levels including Mathematics with a Grade “B” or better, Physical Science and English Language
  • Three passes at Advanced Level in Physics and any two of the following: Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology
