The Department of Hospitality and Tourism has an outstanding reputation around Zimbabwe as the degree programme is truly practically oriented and prepares students for the job market. The practical exposure is enhanced by the availability of two (2) state of the art training hotels which make experiential learning a reality

The department prides itself of a highly qualified human capital base specializing in various areas including gastronomic studies, innovation and technology, entrepreneurship, event management, accessible tourism and tourism policy among others within the field of hospitality and tourism.

As community service the department prides itself in offering philanthropic activities such as; donating to old peoples’ and children’s homes. In additional we promote and showcase the rich, historical culture and heritage of Mashonaland West community, through our landmark annual event of Chirorodziva Calabash. We also provide short courses in Bakery and Basic Cookery Studies, Basic cookery, hair dressing, massage, braiding and weaving, nails, facials, reflexology and make-up for a small fee. After successfully completing the courses graduates are awarded Chinhoyi University of Technology certificates and we also take pride in being one of the trade testing centres.

The department in its endeavour to mobilize resources is currently operating a fast food business to complement the university funds.

Programmes

Bachelor of Science Degree in Hospitality and Tourism

The Bachelor of Science degree in Hospitality and Tourism is a four-year full time Honours Degree Programme. The programme of study comprises six semesters of full time studies at the University and one year of industrial attachment. The degree programme focuses on Hospitality and Tourism as two interrelated areas of study.

The program aims at producing a technically skilled professional equipped with management and entrepreneurial skills and who can adapt to the dynamic needs of the hospitality and tourism industry.

Regulations

These regulations must be read in conjunction with the Chinhoyi University of Technology General Academic Regulations for Undergraduate Degrees, hereinafter referred to as the General Regulations. The Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Hospitality and Tourism will be awarded to candidates who successfully complete the programme in accordance with the following regulations.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Normal Entry

Prospective students must comply with Section 3 of the General Regulations of the Chinhoyi University of Technology. Generally, entry requirements for acceptance are:-

– Good Advanced Level passes in Geography, Management of Business, Accounting, Economics and Food Science or acceptable equivalents.

– ‘O’ Level passes in English, Science and Mathematics are a requirement.

– A candidate, who holds an Advanced/ Higher National Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management or its equivalent qualifications from a recognised institution may be considered for direct entry into semester 3 of the Programme, provided they have covered all the necessary courses and have good passes.

Mature Entry

– Be at least 23 or 25 years old for females and males respectively

– Have at least 5 ‘O’ levels

– Be a holder of National Diploma in Professional Cookery, Hotel and Catering Studies, Bakery Studies or any other relevant qualifications from a recognised institution. In addition, the candidate should have a relevant
