The Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC) was established in 1996 by the World Wide Fund for Nature, South Africa (WWF-SA) in close cooperation with interested and affected parties in southern Africa, including national and provincial government departments, other conservation agencies and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
o The SAWC is a recognised centre of specialization in conservation education, training and skills development. It is an independent SADC training institution and as such does not receive a government subsidy.
o Incorporated in the Republic of South Africa under Section 21 of the Companies Act, 1973 (Act 61 of 1973), the SAWC is a legal association with the registered name of the Southern African Wildlife College – Registration Number 1996/005726/08).
o Registered as a non-profit public benefit company the SAWC is proudly supported by both WWF-SA and the Peace Parks Foundation (PPF) together with SACET, an independent Capital Trust Fund set up by WWF-SA in 1999 to provide a reliable income stream for the Wildlife College in perpetuity. o The SAWC is provisionally registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training as a Private Higher Education Institution under the Higher Education Act, 1997, Registration Certificate Number: 2011/HE08/004. It is also provisionally registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training as a Private Further Education and Training College Registration Number 2008/FE08/003).
o The SAWC is accredited with CATHSSETA, the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sports Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) and has been appointed as an Institute of Sectoral and Occupational Excellence (ISOE) for its outstanding contribution to skills development and organisational capacitation by CATHSSETA; the custodian of national qualifications in the fields of tourism, tourist guiding and nature conservation
o The SAWC is registered as a VAT vendor with the South African Revenue Services (SARS) – VAT Registration No: 4370159610 and Tax Reference No: 9508059640.
