What happens in Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies?
In this department, the languages and cultures of the two great classical civilisations of Greece and Rome are studied; in the Mediterranean world, these cultures met and influenced one another and their legacy exercises a lasting influence on our world.
The department offers language courses in Greek and Latin. No previous knowledge is required in any of these modules for study in the first year. Courses dealing with Classical Mythology and Classical Civilisations are also offered under Classical Studies
Undergraduate courses in Greek, Latin and Classical Studies are available as majors and/or electives in various programmes and no previous knowledge is required in any of these courses for study in the first year. Students, however, should adhere to all the admission requirements of the University of the Free State and the relevant programme they apply for before they can register for these courses.

Students can also join us for studies in Honours, Masters and Doctorate degrees in Classical Languages (Greek and/or Latin) or Classical Studies.

What is the benefit of a study of Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies?
It is important for students who prepare themselves as teachers, lawyers, ministers, Bible translators, language practitioners, journalists, literary critics, museum experts, tour guides, and political commentators.
It is also beneficial for students in religious studies, history, communication sciences, sociology, political science, philosophy, languages and literature, art, drama, as well as music. UFS Department of Greek Latin and Classical Studies
