Payment plan for tuition and residence fees

  • Student shall not be allowed to enrol or add/change modules at any stage unless the financial obligations have been met in full.
  • Accounts reflect various payment dates indicating the latest date by which the payment must reach the University of Limpopo. If a module’s block code is changed it could in some instances result in an earlier payment date as it is determined by the block code of the module.
  • These payment dates cannot be extended under any circumstances as the University of Limpopo does not permit instalment arrangements beyond the respective payment dates.
  • The University of Limpopo uses the services of external debt collectors for the collection of overdue accounts and the student will be held liable for all costs incurred including the debt collector’s costs.
  • Not receiving an account statement does not relieve students of the obligation to pay by the payment due dates.

Different categories of international students

  • South African citizen provided he/she does not have a study visa in his/her other passport. Students should bear in mind that some countries do not allow dual citizenship and that South Africa does not allow dual citizenship with countries who do not allow it. Therefore, to register as a South African citizen, students will be required to submit a South African passport or South African identity document. This category of students qualifies to pay local fees.
  • Citizen of another country but with permanent residence in South Africa: Permanent residence in South Africa entitles the holder to rights similar to that of South African citizens with a few exceptions. The students will be required to submit a valid passport with a South African permanent residence permit/stamp therein. This category of students qualifies to pay local fees. University of Limpopo Fees
  • Refugees: A refugee is a foreign national who has refugee status accorded by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), has a South African identity book which is stamped as refugee status, and is normally valid for two years until permanent status is awarded. If not, accorded status reverts to “asylum seeker”. The Refugee Act, Act No. 130 of 1998 (Section 27) provides refugee students the right to study without a study permit. This category of students qualifies to pay local fees.
  • Asylum seekers: An asylum seeker is a person who comes to South Africa and applies to the government for protection as a refugee. An asylum seeker should have a valid permit issued under the Immigration Act, Act No. 13 of 2002 (Section 13) Department of Home Affairs. Tuition fees are similar to those of local South African students and they pay local application fees. No medical aid cover is legally required, however, it is highly recommended.

Who pays international fees?

  • Asylum seekers: – pay international fees until they officially receive the refugee status.
  • Diplomats and their dependents stationed in South Africa – pay international fees until they themselves have obtained SA citizenship or permanent residency.
  • International University of Limpopo employees and their dependents – pay international fees until they themselves have obtained SA citizenship or permanent residency.
  • International Students who are children of South African citizens or Permanent Residents – pay international fees until they themselves have obtained SA citizenship or permanent residency.
  • SA Permanent Resident Applicants under Review (including those married to SA residents/citizens) – there is no guarantee that permanent residence status will be granted until such status is granted, international fees apply.
  • International Students who are married (including same sex marriages) to SA citizens or permanent residents – pay international fees until they have obtained SA citizenship or permanent residency.
  • International Students who are in life partnerships with SA citizens or permanent residents – pay International fees until they have obtained SA citizenship or permanent residency.
  • International Students who pay SA taxes (e.g. contract workers or temporary residents) – the criterion of paying tax in South Africa does not change a person’s immigration status and as such it is not sufficient for a reduction in international fees. University of Limpopo Fees
  • International Students who pay SADC taxes – paying tax in a SADC country does not change a person’s immigration status and as such does not qualify for exemption from international fees.
  • SA & SADC Temporary Residents – If there is an expiry visa date and if individuals are required to renew residence status periodically, then such individuals are not permanent residents of the country and do not qualify to pay local fees.

Changes of international status
Should the student international status change after registration, the changes will only be implemented in the next registration, meaning the student will still be fully liable for the fees as it was billed before the status was changed.
