Consumer Science at Kovsies

Consumer science is a diverse discipline addressing various aspects of basic human needs. It explores individual’s behaviour in relation to food, clothing, textiles, housing, nutrition and food security. Students in this dynamic curriculum become part of a growing research community built on the understanding of consumer behaviour and the motivation behind individual and family decision-making regarding their basic needs.
In the diverse environment of South Africa’s cultural rich population, understanding consumers and their behaviours are of utmost importance. The composition of the South African consumer market changed significantly over the last years and together with the impact of globalisation, the needs of consumers are continuously evolving. This places additional emphasis the unique role of the consumer scientist to develop in addressing these changing consumer needs. Consumer scientists acquire essential knowledge and skills through our academic programmes that will equip them to assist consumers to improve their life skills as well as their socio-economic situation.
